Download File During a friendship unit, I often ask students to complete a book page. Then, I put the pages together to create a class friendship book that the students can read and, ideally, use to make new friends.
After the lesson, I put the pages together to create a book. For students gradeswe discuss specific situations where we can show star friendship skills. Then, students are assigned a situation and must write and illustrate how they would handle it.
I then create a reminder book out of their pages. Rumors I often use this Norman Rockwell picture to start class discussions on friendship. Play the telephone game. Whisper a couple sentences to one student and have that student whisper what they heard to another student, and so on.
Typically, the statement gets altered. Use this as an opportunity to reflect with students. Connect the game to Norman Rockwell's picture. Does it matter if the rumor is true or false? How do you feel when people talk about you behind your back? Would you still consider someone a friend if they shared one of your secrets?
I ask two students to help act out the story as I read it, allowing for a more interactive and engaging story. I use Post-Its with stars drawn on them to define a star-bellied vs. After the story, we reflect on the way the Sneetches treated one another at the beginning and how that changed by the end.
Then, we transition to a game.
Students stand in a circle while I hand out Post-Its with stars on them. I alternate so that half of the students have stars and half do not. I remind students that having a star does not mean that you are better--it's just for the game.
