Fellowship Active Fellowship is achieved by presenting a thesis in the field of otolaryngology considered acceptable to a panel of peers. The first step in becoming a candidate for Active Fellowship is proposal for Fellowship by two voting Fellows of the Society Active, Senior or Emeritus.

However, over the past decade, Dr. Halum has a long history of basic science, translational, and clinical research contributions. Halum came to Indianapolis 8 years ago, she spent the initial 7 months building a basic science research laboratory focused on stem cell research for the treatment of voice, swallowing, and airway disorders.

She worked closely with otolaryngology residents and medical students at the Indiana University School of Medicine to promote clinical and translational research that would ultimately lead to improved patient care. Her research efforts resulted in funding through the National Institutes of Health based on the merits of the work being produced.

Halum has developed numerous national and international collaborations through her research. Current projects include the use of stems cells to restore voice and swallowing in patients with vocal cord paralysis, to replace the larynx or voice box through tissue engineering, and to restore swallowing in patients with swallowing problems.

In addition to the projects through her laboratory, Dr. Halum has also focused her academic efforts to improve the safety and quality of life of patients who are tracheostomy dependent.

The Following Awards May Be Made Annually for Excellence in Theses

Recently she was the principal investigator on a collaborative study involving eight other major academic institutions in the United States. The study revealed several important risk factors for tracheostomy-related complications. She is now involved with an international collaboration that will enroll hospitals in quality improvement programs to help improve safety and quality of care for patients with tracheostomies.

Halum regularly participates as an invited reviewer for many of the top otolaryngology journals, she has written board questions for the American Board of Otolaryngology ABOand she serves on numerous academic committees such as the Airway and Swallowing Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology.
